Jack Hicks is a social research consultant living in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and co-ordinator of the five-year Qaujivallianiq inuusirijauvalauqtunik ('Learning from lives that have been lived') suicide follow-back study [2007 activity report; two-page information sheet for participants in English and Inuktitut]

He is involved in several other research initiatives including an evaluation of the implementation of the Greenland Home Rule Government's National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, the U.S. National Science Foundation-funded research project 'Migration in the Arctic', and the BOREAS collaborative research project 'Understanding Migration in the Circumpolar North.'

Jack's research interests include (A) imperialism, colonialism and 'internal colonialism' in the Arctic, anti-colonialism, and decolonization processes; (B) the negotiation and implementation of indigenous self-government regimes; (C) the social determinants of the emotional, mental and physical health of children; and, (D) the impact of (A) and (B) on (C).

He is also an external Ph.D. student at Ilisimatusarfik (The University of Greenland), writing a dissertation on 'Internal colonialism and the social determinants of elevated rates of suicide among Inuit youth.'

Jack moved to the Arctic "for a summer" in 1981, and after working in a range of positions in Inuvik, Yellowknife, Pangnirtung, Resolute Bay and Rankin Inlet moved to Ottawa in 1991 to become Executive Director of the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada. He returned north in 1994 to serve as Director of Research for the Nunavut Implementation Commission. From the creation of Nunavut in 1999 until the fall of 2004 he was the Government of Nunavut's Director of Evaluation and Statistics.
